The dominant narrative emphasizes legal certainty, transparency, regulatory compliance, the professionalization of management and the incorporation of technology to gain efficiency. This approach is not coincidental: it responds to a necessary phase in territories that aspire to attract qualified investment, larger scale projects and stable relationships with institutional capital.

In this context, large global professional services firms—especially those with a strong presence in auditing, legal, tax and advisory—play a decisive role. They act as a trusted infrastructure of the economic system: they organize, validate, standardize and make the territory understandable for investors, financial entities and public administrations. Their function is essential and, in many cases, irreplaceable.

Now, precisely due to the nature of this role, it is important to clearly distinguish where its function reaches and where a different one begins.

The innovation model that these organizations promote is, consistent with their mission, a model of internal and operational innovation. Artificial intelligence, process automation, advanced data analysis or the digitalization of workflows are incorporated to improve service quality, reduce risks, increase traceability and strengthen control and reporting capacity. It is an innovation aimed at strengthening existing structures, not redefining them.

That approach is logical, responsible, and aligned with your systemic position. But it also has a clear limit.

The next phase of economic development—especially in territories with regulatory, fiscal and geostrategic singularities such as the Canary Islands—is not played solely on the incremental improvement of consolidated models. It plays on the ability to design new architectures: legal, technological and operational. Architectures that, in many cases, still do not fully fit into the classic compartments of traditional advisory, and that require prior design, structuring and execution work before they can be audited, certified or escalated.

Here a distinction appears that is often blurred in public debate: being a guarantor of the system is not the same as being an architect of new structures within the system. Both functions are necessary, but they are not interchangeable.

Large organizations are optimized for the former. Their size, fiduciary responsibility, reputational exposure and governance framework naturally place them in a position of structural prudence. Not because they lack vision or talent, but because their role is to preserve stability, coherence and predictability. Its value is in turning the complex into a standard, not in operating in areas where the standard does not yet exist.

However, it is precisely in these areas—prior to standardization—where a good part of the economic future is decided. In practice, this distinction can be observed in initiatives that are already beginning to emerge in territories with an advanced vocation. Let’s think about a project promoted in the Canary Islands to structure a public-private vehicle linked to a strategic area – for example, scientific-technical infrastructures related to the ocean, climate or energy – that requires integrating special tax regime, data governance, intellectual property and multi-level regulatory compliance.

In the first phase, the work does not consist of auditing or certifying, but rather designing the architecture: defining the appropriate legal form, the governance model, the fiscal fit, technological operations and the relationship between public and private actors. It is a necessarily flexible phase, led by small and highly specialized teams, where there is still no standard and where the value is in building a viable and replicable model.

Only when this architecture demonstrates legal consistency and operational traction does the next layer enter: homologation, auditing, standardization and scalability. This is when the big players in control and certification can turn this model into a reference for institutional financing, banking, and larger-scale deployment. The system works because each phase is assumed by whoever is designed for it.

This is not a criticism of the existing model, but rather a functional delimitation. Confusing both layers leads to two common mistakes: requiring large firms to assume roles for which they are not designed, or thinking that structural innovation can only emerge from frameworks designed for certification and control.

The real opportunity for the Canary Islands is not in replacing one model with another, but in correctly articulating both plans. A solid, rigorous and internationally recognizable institutional level, and another level—more flexible, more technical in design—capable of building new solutions that, once mature, can be integrated, audited and escalated by systemic actors.

That is the point at which the debate must rise. It is not about who is bigger, more visible or more recognized, but rather about what role each actor plays in the economic development value chain. When this distinction is understood, the ecosystem stops being competitive in an unproductive sense and begins to be truly complementary.

And it is there, in that well-understood complementarity, where the next qualitative leap is played.

By Antonio Tejeda Encinas CEO META Channel Corporation In recent years, a discourse of economic and institutional maturity has…

[1840,1836
2060,2205,1906,1967,2077,2320,2145,1922,2068,2061,2163,1882,1981,2243,2099,2308,2215,1903,1898,2108,2201,1968,2219,2262,1867,1949,2198,2113,2195
post-38608","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-global-expansion-and-strategy","category-industry-analysis","tag-advanced-economic-development","tag-artificial-intelligence-applied-to-management","tag-attracting-qualified-investment","tag-audit-and-certification","tag-canary-islands-economic-ecosystem","tag-canary-islands-special-tax-regime","tag-canary-islands-taxation","tag-data-governance","tag-design-of-legal-structures","tag-economic-development-in-the-canary-islands","tag-economic-governance","tag-institutional-architecture","tag-institutional-capital","tag-institutional-maturity","tag-institutional-scalability","tag-intellectual-property","tag-investment-in-singular-territories","tag-legal-and-financial-architecture","tag-legal-certainty","tag-model-standardization","tag-operational-innovation","tag-process-automation","tag-public-private-investment","tag-public-private-models","tag-regulatory-compliance","tag-strategic-advisory","tag-structural-innovation","tag-territorial-economic-strategy","tag-trust-infrastructures
["GET
